AFC/M23 Issues a Warning to Kinshasa Regime Over Continued Civilian Attacks

Bunagana – In a statement shared on social media by Lawrence Kanyuka, Spokesperson and Communication Focal Point for the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC/M23), the movement has condemned what it describes as relentless attacks on civilians by coalition forces aligned with the Kinshasa regime.

According to the communiqué, AFC/M23 alleges that these forces have escalated their offensive using fighter jets and helicopters operating from Goma and Kavumu airports. The movement accuses the regime of indiscriminate slaughter of civilians and targeting its positions, despite repeated warnings to cease hostilities.

Kanyuka’s statement emphasized that AFC/M23 cannot remain passive in the face of such atrocities. “If these threats continue to escalate, we will have no option but to eliminate them from their source, wherever they may arise, to protect the civilian population,” the communiqué reads.

Additionally, AFC/M23 expressed frustration at what it termed unjust blame for actions allegedly committed by the FARDC (Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Kanyuka questioned why civilians under the movement’s protection are being attacked and killed, reaffirming that AFC/M23’s existence is rooted in self-defense.

The statement concludes with a call for vigilance against fraudulent solicitations and fake news, which the group accuses the Kinshasa regime of spreading to mislead the public.

The official communiqué was issued from Bunagana on December 27, 2024, and signed by Lawrence Kanyuka, who also serves as the Head of Communication and Media for the M23 Movement.

This statement comes amid heightened tensions in eastern DRC, where the ongoing conflict has led to widespread displacement and civilian suffering. The AFC/M23’s stance signals the potential for further escalation as both sides exchange accusations over atrocities and territorial control.
