In a significant diplomatic engagement, the European Union Ambassador to Uganda, His Excellency Jan Sadek, met with General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), on Thursday afternoon at the Special Forces Command (SFC) Headquarters in Entebbe.
The meeting underscored the ongoing commitment between Uganda and the European Union to fostering security, stability, and collaboration in addressing regional challenges.
The discussions focused primarily on pressing regional security matters of mutual concern, reflecting the shared interest in peace and stability across East and Central Africa.
With Uganda playing a crucial role in maintaining security, particularly in counterterrorism operations and peacekeeping missions, the EU has remained an essential partner in supporting these initiatives.
General Kainerugaba expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Sadek for his continued efforts in strengthening bilateral relations. He highlighted the importance of diplomatic engagements in reinforcing cooperation and enhancing Uganda’s security framework.
“We appreciate the European Union’s steadfast partnership in addressing security threats and working towards sustainable peace. These engagements are crucial for strategic planning and coordination,” stated General Kainerugaba.
Ambassador Sadek, in turn, commended the UPDF for its proactive approach in promoting regional security and stability.
Uganda has been a key player in peacekeeping efforts, particularly in Somalia under the African Union Transition Mission (ATMIS), as well as in joint military operations such as Operation Shujaa, a collaborative effort with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) aimed at neutralizing armed rebel groups like the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).
“The European Union acknowledges Uganda’s critical role in regional peace and security. We stand ready to support Uganda in addressing shared challenges and fostering long-term stability,” Ambassador Sadek affirmed.
He further emphasized the EU’s ongoing initiatives, including capacity-building programs for security forces, humanitarian assistance in conflict zones, and financial aid aimed at supporting regional peacekeeping missions.
Beyond security matters, the meeting also touched on broader aspects of cooperation, including economic development, governance, and human rights.
The EU has been a strong advocate for strengthening institutional frameworks in Uganda, promoting democratic governance, and supporting sustainable development projects that contribute to economic resilience.
With Uganda’s growing regional influence, collaboration with international partners like the EU remains essential in ensuring that security efforts align with sustainable development and prosperity.
The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both parties reaffirming their commitment to continued engagement and cooperation. Moving forward, Uganda and the EU will explore further avenues to enhance security coordination, bolster peace initiatives, and deepen diplomatic ties.
As Uganda continues to navigate complex security dynamics in the Great Lakes region, its partnership with the European Union remains a cornerstone for stability.
The discussions between General Kainerugaba and Ambassador Sadek reflect a shared vision of a safer and more prosperous region, built on mutual respect, collaboration, and strategic planning.
The EU’s commitment to Uganda’s security agenda is a testament to the importance of international alliances in addressing modern security challenges. As both parties work together, their partnership will undoubtedly contribute to a more secure and stable East and Central Africa.
