The event took place at the Stade de l’Unité in Goma and drew a large crowd from across the country. The stadium was filled with citizens from all walks of life, including various civilian and military leaders. Corneille Nangaa, the General Director of AFC/M23, was also in attendance.
The gathering was marked by joyful prayers and uplifting hymns praising God. Participants expressed gratitude for the divine protection over both civilians and M23 soldiers throughout the ongoing conflict, which continues to challenge the current government led by President Félix Tshisekedi in Kinshasa.
Colonel Ernest Sebagenzi, commander of the 1st Brigade in Rutshuru, delivered a heartfelt speech recounting their journey from the Sarambwe forests to the capture of strategic cities like Goma and Bukavu. He emphasized that their fight continues with offensives in other parts of the country.
He declared, “God belongs to the soldiers. We put Him first because we know the blessings He has continuously granted us since our days in the forests up to now. Words cannot fully express our gratitude for what God has done, but we feel it deeply and will continue to give thanks.”
Julien Katembo, the Mayor of Goma, conveyed a message of national unity transcending ethnic and racial differences. He urged all Congolese to embrace love and solidarity to build a prosperous and peaceful Congo.
He said, “My message to the Congolese people is one of love. Judging by appearances is unnecessary. We have a beautiful country; let us be united so that Congo can develop and achieve lasting peace. What matters is that we are Congolese, and this Congo will be built by ourselves.”
Katembo also highlighted that for the past 13 years, God has protected and preserved the people through difficult times. He cited the biblical example of David as someone whom God empowered to accomplish great deeds, affirming that even a few can wield extraordinary strength when guided by God.
Currently, the AFC/M23 coalition controls both Kivu provinces, including major cities such as Goma and Bukavu. The city of Goma, which hosts an international airport, has seen no flights for the past five months due to the ongoing conflict.
After a long period without public events at Stade de l’Unité, the venue has now reopened to host gatherings and sporting events. Plans are underway to reopen Goma’s airport following repairs after damage caused during clashes involving the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC), SADC troops, and foreign mercenaries in areas captured by the AFC/M23.
