Persistent Violence Against Banyamulenge: FARDC Launches Deadly Attack in Minembwe, Missionary Jean de Dieu Calls for Global Intervention

On December 25, 2024, as the world celebrated Christmas, the region of Minembwe in South Kivu Province was struck by violent attacks targeting the Banyamulenge community. The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) launched heavy assaults on areas including Ilundu, Runundu,Kabingo and other parts of Minembwe Commune, leaving many civilians displaced and others losing their lives.

Reports confirm that during these attacks, FARDC soldiers looted various goods, including food supplies such as flour and beans, livestock, and even personal clothing belonging to men and women. Beyond looting, the soldiers fired indiscriminately at civilians, injuring and killing many who were fleeing to forests and mountains for safety.

A 17-year-old girl was among those killed while attempting to escape from Runundu. Many others spent the night hiding in the forests.

In an interview with a journalist from Ityazo.com, Missionary Jean de Dieu, an Ambassador for Banyamulenge Peace Advocates, condemned the actions of FARDC and called on the international community and human rights organizations to help stop the ongoing violence claiming the lives of innocent civilians.

He stated:

“We are deeply saddened by the continued mistreatment of the Banyamulenge, especially during a time when the world was celebrating Christmas. Civilians are being shot in their homes, others looted, and houses destroyed. These actions must stop immediately. We urge the international community, human rights organizations, and defenders of human dignity to intervene and resolve this crisis permanently.”

Jean de Dieu emphasized the need for all parties to pursue peaceful approaches and seek lasting solutions to the persistent insecurity in Minembwe.

Although FARDC aimed to achieve their objectives, reports indicate that in areas like Lundu and Lwiko, they faced strong resistance from Banyamulenge self-defense groups, forcing them to retreat to Ugeafi and Makangata.

Residents are urged to prioritize their safety and avoid areas with ongoing military operations. Many regions remain under significant threat, with opposing forces continuing to clash.

Jean de Dieu calls on everyone including international organizations, human rights defenders, and the Congolese people to unite in finding a sustainable solution to the challenges faced by the Banyamulenge. Lasting peace is the foundation of a better future for all.
